Light with fresh notes of red fruits, yellow nectarines, some lavender and a lively minerality. It is best enjoyed slightly chilled (approx. 10°C) and poured into a carafe beforehand so that it can breathe. By the way, "Renegado" is the Portuguese word for "renegade".
Goes well with: pizza, salad, salami, vegetables, for a picnic, with an aperitif and is very versatile on its own or as an accompaniment.
This wine is a field blend of red and white grapes from the Douro Valley.
A field blend is the remnant of an old winemaking tradition: in the past, the vineyards were not planted according to variety, but with different white and red grapes. When the time came, everything was harvested and fermented together.
The Uivo Renegado is a field blend of more than 25 different autochthonous grape varieties - 50% red and 50% white. The red ones include Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Sousão, Bastardo, Tinta Barocca, Tinta Francisca and Tinto Cão, while the white ones include Rabigato, Malvasia Fina, Alvarinho, Gouveio, Verdelho, Esgana Cão and Viosinho.
The vineyards are over 80 years old and no longer produce much, but the quality is particularly good. The harvest takes place by hand in September and the aging takes place half in used French barriques of second and third wines, the other half in stainless steel tanks. The aging lasts 6 months, the subsequent fermentation with natural yeasts 3 weeks.
The vineyards are fertilized with vegetable compost to generate natural nitrogen. The wine is a "claret", i.e. a dark rosé or light red wine - depending on your perspective - and slightly cloudy.
