Mackerel is one of the most popular fish in the eastern Atlantic, from the British Isles to the coasts of North Africa.

The island of Escombreras in Cartagena gets its name from "scomber scombrus", because in ancient Rome it was one of the most important export markets for Garum was the mythical Roman sauce, which was made primarily from mackerel.

In recent years, mackerel has gained a high status in gastronomy, partly due to the popularity of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine.

The Andalusian mackerel, which "Scomber colias" is a highly prized fish native to this area.
