The Douro Superior vineyards are known for their barren landscapes, where it almost never rains. Especially the vineyards near the river (Douro) have a very low production rate but produce amazing fruit.

The Proibido comes from old vines between 40 and 80 years old growing near Foz Côa, on small plots at an altitude of about 500m above sea level, mainly oriented north-east.
The vineyards are worked manually and only plowed by a workhorse when necessary. The use of herbicides and pesticides is completely avoided. For Márcio, respecting nature comes first and he does his best to produce his wines as naturally as possible.

Intense black fruit on the nose, spices and roasted aromas. Very balanced in the mouth, with a long body and lingering soft tannins. Goes very well with game, goose and strong cheese...

The Proibido Grande Reserva 2018 is a young wine with enormous aging potential.

The imaginative name 'Proibido' (meaning 'forbidden' in English) pays homage to a very old man from whom Márcio bought his very first grapes in 2010. This man cultivated a small 80-year-old vineyard, but also had a secret past: namely, during the Salazar dictatorship, he survived mainly by smuggling near the border to Spain and so Márcio decided to call the wines from his grapes “Proibido”. After the old man died, Márcio bought the vineyard.
Production is very low: 2,200 bottles.

Márcio Lopes was born in Porto in 1983 and spent many summer holidays with his grandparents in the hinterland of Porto where they grew corn and wheat and also produced wine. At the age of 6, his grandmother put him in a lagar (traditional Portuguese granite basin used for winemaking) to stomp the grapes inside, as is still traditionally done today. This was the first of many many wines that young Márcio has since produced. The rest is history...
A year before graduating in Agricultural Engineering in 2006, Márcio started working with the famous winemaker Anselmo Mendes in Melgaço. In 2008 he went to Australia, where he was responsible for two classes in Rutherglen and Tasmania. In 2010 he started his own project “Pequenos Rebentos” (Portuguese for “little offspring”) in the Minho region, home of the Vinhos Verdes.
