Mineral elegance from the granite terroir
This expressive Saint Joseph embodies the vision of Nicolas Jaboulet and Alexandre Caso: classic terroir in a contemporary interpretation. A single-varietal Marsanne that combines the mineral power of the granite soils with remarkable finesse.
Terroir & Origin: The grapes come from the legendary steep slopes of Saint Jean de Muzols and Tournon. These terraced vineyards, whose history dates back to antiquity, rise majestically above the right bank of the Rhône. The granite slopes, with their south to southeast exposure, define the distinctive character of this wine. Saint-Joseph, once known as "Vin de Mauves" and renamed by Jesuits in the 17th century, now extends across 26 communes along a 40 km stretch between Condrieu in the north and Cornas in the south.
Character & Aroma: Crystal-clear, bright golden yellow with brilliant light reflections. The bouquet unfolds with refreshing finesse – vibrant citrus fruits and juicy limes meet subtle toasty aromas from barrel aging.
The first impression on the palate is one of impressive clarity and minerality. The lively acidity lends the wine tension and freshness, while it opens up and gains volume with every moment. The initial citrus aromas develop into a fascinating, almost sea-salty minerality – the unmistakable signature of the granite terroir.
The typical richness of the Marsanne grape is evident in a creamy, concentrated mid-palate, elegantly rounded off by delicately bitter notes in the long finish.
Vinification: The philosophy behind this wine: a perfect balance between two styles. Grapes from northern Saint-Joseph contribute minerality and fruit, while those from the historic center of the appellation provide creaminess. After gentle pressing, fermentation and aging take place over 10 months in 600-liter demi-muids oak barrels. These larger barrels allow for subtle oak integration without masking the delicate fruit.
Serving suggestion: A versatile food companion that reveals its full complexity at 12°C. Excellent with grilled fine fish with lemon butter, seared scallops, or delicate poultry in a light sauce. Also an outstanding choice with goat cheese or Mediterranean vegetable dishes. This wine is already at its perfect drinking age and will develop beautifully over the next 3-5 years.
The 2024 vintage presented winemakers with challenges: after frost in April and heavy rainfall until July, the harvest, beginning on September 10th, required the utmost precision. The meticulous selection was rewarded – the white wines exhibit a wonderfully creamy acidity and impressive structure, giving this Saint Joseph its special radiance.
