Alvaro Castro has been making wine at an altitude of over 500 meters with his daughter Maria, a trained oenologist, since 1989. Their vineyards stretch picturesquely between pine forests with spectacular mountain panoramas. The extremely granite-rich soil produces elegant, lean wines – significantly more refined than those in the Douro region further north, with less alcohol and sweetness, but mineral, classic, and straightforward.
Portugal's leading winemakers reverently refer to Alvaro Castro as the brilliant, chaotic Dao winemaker who undisputedly dominates the region and occasionally even creates the finest wines in the entire country. As the only world-class winery in the Dao, it is among Portugal's top five producers, and its finesse rivals that of premium Northern Rhône wines.
Even the base wines impress with their refined, powerful fruit. The white wines display aromatic brilliance and are reminiscent of great Burgundies such as Puligny-Montrachet or Meursault.
