The great difference and subdivision of this large family of tunas lies in their different migratory routes, diet and size, although they are all oceanic species capable of long migrations and forming one or two populations in each ocean.

The skipjack tuna (Katsuwomus pelamis) is an epipelagic tuna, a great swimmer and traveler that is at the top of the food chain. During its life it makes two types of migrations: a trophic migration to search for food and for sexual development and maturation, and another reproductive migration for spawning, that is, to lay eggs. They always reproduce in the same places where members of their species have been doing so for generations.
During their long migrations, they form large schools near the surface, associated with floating objects, birds and whales, making them more vulnerable to capture.
In addition to its culinary potential, tuna also has a high nutritional value. Its rational consumption promotes cardiovascular health as it contains omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. It is an excellent source of protein (29 grams of protein per 100 grams of fresh fish).
