A silky Syrah with a modern touch
This seductive blend, predominantly Syrah with a touch of Viognier, is the creation of Nicolas Jaboulet and Alexandre Caso. With their Maison Les Alexandrins, these two Rhône experts reinterpret classic grape varieties in a contemporary, approachable style.
Terroir & Origin: The grapes thrive on the gravelly soils near Beaumont Monteux and Pont de l'Isère on the right bank of the Rhône, as well as on the Ardèche plateaus. The countless river pebbles store heat during the day and release it at night – ideal for the optimal ripening of the Syrah. Here, between Vienne and Valence, in the historical cradle of the Syrah grape, this variety unfolds its full potential.
Character & Aromatics: The wine presents itself in a deep ruby red with violet reflections. The nose reveals intense aromas of red berries – juicy raspberries and cherries – interwoven with floral violet notes and a hint of black pepper. On the palate, the powerful Syrah shows its elegant side: The small addition of Viognier lends the wine a remarkably silky, almost creamy texture. Fresh fruit aromas combine with subtle spice nuances to create a harmonious whole. The lively acidity and supple tannins ensure a juicy, approachable drinking experience.
Vinification: After careful hand-harvesting, the berries are destemmed and undergo a cool pre-fermentation to optimally extract the delicate fruit and floral aromas. The two-week fermentation is accompanied by regular remontages and gentle pigeage for careful tannin extraction. Aging deliberately takes place in stainless steel tanks to preserve the primary fruitiness and freshness – entirely in keeping with the modern Alexandrin style.
Serving suggestion: A versatile red wine that unfolds its full aromatic spectrum when slightly chilled at 15-16°C. Perfect as a sophisticated aperitif or as an ideal accompaniment to grilled meats, lamb skewers, Mediterranean vegetable dishes, or spicy hard cheeses. The wine is already very approachable and should be enjoyed within the next three years to fully appreciate its youthful fruitiness.
Despite frost in the spring and heavy rainfall until July , the 2024 vintage produced surprisingly crisp and delicious red wines thanks to meticulous vineyard work and selective harvesting from September 10th onwards - this Cabanon is a perfect example of this.
