The story behind the name
Jeanne la Folle – Joanna the Mad – a name that sparks curiosity and tells stories. Named after Joanna I of Castile, Duchess of Burgundy, whose passionate love drove her to madness. Was she truly mad, or did she embody the madness of love itself? This wine carries the intensity of her story within it.
Origin and terroir
Originating from the rolling hills of the Côte Chalonnaise, this Bourgogne Pinot Noir blends grapes from the distinctive villages of Moroges and Mercurey. The 20- to 40-year-old Pinot Noir vines are rooted in the typically Burgundian, light clay and limestone soils, which impart the wine's unmistakable minerality.
Vinification with dedication
The manual process begins with the early harvest in small 20-kg crates, followed by complete destemming and careful selection at the sorting table. A short maceration on the skins prepares the way for alcoholic fermentation with natural yeasts in the tank. Daily pump-overs ensure gentle extraction and optimal aroma development.
Flavor profile
Nose: This Pinot Noir presents itself in typical Burgundian fashion with a fascinating duality: intense black fruits harmonize with vegetal nuances of blackberries and spicy bay leaf. An aromatic interplay that unites elegance and wildness.
Palate: The 2022 vintage is already showing itself to be approachable and charming. Its lively fruitiness makes it a true delight for all those who appreciate the uncomplicated side of Burgundy.
Enjoyment recommendation
Drinking maturity: Perfect to enjoy within the next 4 years, as long as its youthful freshness and liveliness are paramount.
Serving temperature: 16-18°C
Food pairing: Ideal with grilled poultry, mushroom dishes, medium-aged cheese, or simply on its own as a meditation on the mysteries of love and madness.
A wine that, like its namesake, walks between passion and reason – a Burgundian poem in a bottle.
