Sardines in a spicy sauce made from chili (pimento), tomato and garlic.
This recipe goes back to Georges Hilliet, the founder of Belle Iloise, who had the habit of preparing a spicier version of sardines with tomatoes.
On the advice of his friends, he added this recipe, originally intended only for his own consumption, to his range under the name Pitomaïl (pimento, tomate, aïl / chili, tomato, garlic).
That was in the 1960s - today the recipe is one of the bestsellers in Belle-Iloise.

However, for the sake of enjoyment, you should definitely not miss out on the many other great creations from the incomparably rich range of flavors of canned sardines: sardines in a fruity sauce, in white wine, in butter, with water and lemon... Try it out!
The sardine is still the linchpin of many port cities in Brittany, but also in Spain and Portugal. However, fortunately it is not threatened with extinction and can be enjoyed without regret.
