Quevedo Colheita Port 1995: 30 Years of Aging in Old Oak
The 1995 Colheita is an outstanding Tawny Port, combining the tension of a classic Douro vintage with the serenity and complexity of long barrel aging. After nearly three decades of aging in old oak barrels, this Port is a quiet powerhouse of flavor.
Vintage and Aging:
The 1995 vintage in the Douro Valley was characterized by balanced weather, culminating in a hot, dry summer. After fermentation, the wine was first aged for two years in stainless steel, followed by an impressive 15 years in 4,000-liter oak barrels. Subsequent aging in used 600-liter barrels completed the process. The total aging time in wood is therefore 30 years in used wood, allowing for subtle integration and elegance without losing its fruit character.
Tasting Notes:
This Colheita shows a medium brick color, reflecting its long oxidative aging. On the nose, it delights with pronounced aromatic intensity: distinctive notes of caramel, quince jam, roasted hazelnut and coffee unfold, complemented by warm spice notes and hints of toasted bread.
On the palate, the wine is complex and expressive. The high acidity is perfectly balanced against the sweetness, giving it a lively freshness. It begins spicy and peppery and develops a velvety texture, culminating in a long, smooth, and caramel-dominated finish.
Enjoyment and Storage:
The 1995 Colheita shows remarkable concentration and impressive balance. It pairs excellently with full-bodied, creamy cheeses, spiced desserts, or dishes with dried fruits. Once opened, this fine Port should be stored cool and enjoyed promptly. According to experts, its drinking window is between 2025 and 2035.
Colheita is a Tawny Port from a single vintage. This means that Colheita ages in barrels for at least seven years to develop a browner color and be influenced by the slow oxidation that occurs when the Port wine comes into contact with oak. Since Quevedo's Colheitas are grown in the upper part of the Douro Valley, where yields are low and the tannins are longer-lasting, they show a fruity character in their youth and are quite full-bodied. Over time, the tannins soften and the fruit makes room for spices and nutty aromas. At this point, they become complex and rich. We can bottle the Colheita every year as long as it is seven or more years old. A Colheita from a specific year can vary greatly depending on the year in which it was bottled. The longer it ages in the barrel, the fewer fruity aromas and tannins it has, because in the bottle, the lack of oxygen slows down the development.
