The house "Ramon Peña" based in Ribadumina, Galicia, can look back on a history of more than 90 years: Founded in 1920 by José Peña Oubiña in Cambados in Galicia, the company is now managed by the third generation of Nely Concheiro. Their business is the production of premium, additive-free canned fish and seafood from the rias (fjords) of Galicia that enjoy worldwide popularity. It is the only company in its sector to be protected by the “Pesca de Rías” trademark, which guarantees the origin and quality of the product.
Ramon Peña's declared goal is to get gourmets and restaurateurs all over the world to rethink. Therefore, only freshly caught fish of the respective season are used and everything is done by hand, apart from the sealing and labeling of the cans. The combination of the best ingredients, old traditional recipes and meticulous quality control results in products of absolute top quality that are completely convincing.

The squid family includes squid, octopus and cuttlefish. They are usually about 30 cm long and weigh up to 5 kilos. Their delicate arms are particularly popular in the kitchen, as is the black ink they use to surround themselves when threatened. It can be used to color pasta or rice. Their flesh is firm and lean and tastes good raw (e.g. as sushi), briefly cooked, seared, grilled or deep-fried.

Even the ancient Romans valued sardines and ate them salted, marinated or smoked. To this day, the sardine is and will remain a high-quality product if the quality and production methods are right. Thanks to their short lifespan, they have absorbed very few pollutants from the sea and have a high proportion of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and trace elements. 100g of sardines (about 8 fish) contain 40% of the recommended daily dose of calcium and 100% of the vitamin D necessary to absorb the trace elements. In order for the human body to be able to absorb all of these valuable nutrients, it is essential that the sardine is preserved in high-quality olive oil, because only this oil allows the human body to break it down and metabolize it.

For the sake of enjoyment, however, you should definitely not do without the many other great creations from the incomparably rich range of flavors of canned sardines: sardines in a fruity sauce, in white wine, in butter, with water and lemon... try it out!

Good to know

"Pesca de Xeito" is a traditional fishing method practiced in Galicia, a region in northwestern Spain.

This method specifically refers to a low-impact type of fishing in which nets are laid out along the coast in a way that does not endanger fish populations and protects the marine environment.

The term "xeito" comes from Galician and means something like "method" or "manner". This type of fishing is often carried out from small boats and aims to sustainably catch certain species such as sardines. The nets are designed so that they do not harm the fish and allow unwanted catches to be released.

This practice is in line with traditional and sustainable fishing methods that aim to maintain ecological balance and support the local economy without overexploiting fish stocks.
