Not all Orléans vinegar is the same – with this one, you know exactly which grape it comes from: pure Merlot.
Martin-Pouret from Orléans on the Loire has been producing vinegar using the traditional Orléans method since 1797. For this vinegar, the vinegar masters use exclusively wine made from Merlot grapes, rather than blending several grape varieties as is usually done. This preserves the character of the grape in the finished vinegar.
The vinegar offers notes of red fruit and a mild, rounded richness. Compared to our Gamay and Cabernet-Franc vinegar, which ages for an additional twelve months in oak barrels, this one is younger and made from a single grape variety – the Merlot character remains clearly recognizable.
Production: The Merlot grapes are made into wine, which is then slowly aged in oak barrels for three weeks – the traditional Orléans method that the city's vinegar masters have cultivated for centuries.
Use it for vinaigrettes for raw vegetables and salads, for deglazing dark meat, or for marinades. Well sealed and stored in a dark place, it will last a very long time, like any vinegar.
Good to know: What "Cépage" means
"Cépage" means grape variety. While most of our vinegars blend several grape varieties, this one comes from just one: Merlot.
