Conserveira “Pinhais” is a family-run business founded in 1920 in the small fishing village of Matosinhos near Porto. Today, almost 100 years later, the company is still family-owned under the leadership of Dr. Antonio Pinhal and is one of the country’s most renowned canned fish producers.
True to the company motto “Quality over quantity,” Pinhais & Co. Ltd. still uses traditional methods, with very little done by machines and most of the work carried out by hand—a rarity today. The olive oil is of excellent quality because the Pinhais family owns its own olive grove in Trás-os-Montes.

Nuri is a brand of Conserveira Pinhais & Co. from Matosinhos, north of Porto. Here, they take great pride in remaining true to the traditional production method. Everything is done manually, very carefully, in many steps. The quality and taste of the canned sardines speak for themselves. Everything is top fresh, with a pleasant aroma. Pinhais buys fresh sardines and fresh ingredients every day: carrots, piri-piri, bay leaves, pepper, etc.
The sardines are steamed to retain less fat in the end. After that, they are canned with a good olive oil from Trás-os-Montes and individually packaged by hand.
Pinhais celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020 and, on this occasion, opened Portugal's first and only sardine museum.
We have been there before; a visit is worth it.
