“Moreish” – English for “you can’t stop drinking it.” Winemaker Luís Lopes calls his wines glou-glou – the French onomatopoeia for the sound of savoring a drink. This elegant white wine from the Dão region lives up to that promise.
The cuvée, made from 60% Maria Gomes and 40% Bical, is grown on clay and limestone soils on an east-west slope and aged for eight months in stainless steel tanks. In the glass, it displays a delicate, luminous lemon-yellow color. The nose offers white flowers, green apple and pear – subtle and inviting. On the palate, it reveals lively acidity, transparent fruit and a long finish with notes of almond and white flowers. A dry, uncomplicated, and highly elegant wine.
It pairs perfectly with grilled fish (a Portuguese classic: Sardinhas Assadas), seafood such as steamed clams with garlic and parsley, or cod dishes like Bacalhau à Brás.
About the winemaker: After training in Portugal, Luís Lopes gained experience in Burgundy, New Zealand and Germany before returning to his homeland in 2006. While working as a cellar master and consultant in the Dão region, he also began making wine under his own name, deliberately in small quantities. Other winemakers simply call him: “He is a national star.”
