This is the philosophy of Miss Can from Lisbon. Lulas Recheadas à Portuguesa are small whole squid stuffed with their own chopped tentacles, rice and vegetables – traditionally Portuguese, nothing fancy.
Anyone who opens the can immediately sees the quality: whole bodies in the tomato sauce, no falling-apart mush. The squid takes up the lion's share at around 64%. When cutting into it, you notice the texture: tender pieces of meat, the rice gives bite and sweetness, the vegetables bind it together. It tastes straightforward and warm – not intensely spicy, but balanced. A good introduction for beginners, a proven classic for connoisseurs.
The processing is artisanal: wild-caught squid is washed, stuffed with the rice-vegetable farce and placed in tomato sauce. Then it goes into the can, promptly and without long waiting times. Vegetable oil (sunflower and soy) rounds it off.
Serving tip: Cold straight from the can with bread, or warm on potatoes and kale. A dry white wine or a light rosé pairs perfectly.
