With this LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Port from the 2018 vintage, bottled in 2023, we present an excellent introduction to the world of ageable Port wines.
This elegant and complex red port impresses with its intense ruby red color and, compared to the vintage port, is already very accessible at a young age, but promises a fascinating development of its complexity in the bottle over the next 10-15 years.
The expressive bouquet is dominated by dark fruits, with particularly enticing aromas of cherries and blackberries standing out with their inviting sweetness and depth.
A subtle hint of fig completes the complex aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine reveals its rich yet smooth character.
Its velvety texture, which it owes to its aging in balseiros, makes it particularly accessible and pleasant.
The aromas of cherries and blackberries already perceived on the nose continue impressively on the palate, creating a rich, satisfying taste experience.
The special character of this port was significantly shaped by the 2018 vintage: a cold and very rainy spring was followed by a cool and rainy summer, which later became hot and very dry. The rainfall in spring and early summer allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes, while the dry weather at harvest time ensured healthy harvests.
Through careful maturation in various vessels, this port developed its balanced character, refined aromas, and fascinating complexity. It proves to be an excellent companion for special occasions, impressing with both its youthful approachability and its considerable aging potential.
Goes well with: dark chocolate, fruit desserts, mature cheeses
Port wine customer:
Ruby is the color of all red wines when they are produced. Ruby Port has a red color, predominant aromas of red fruits, and a full-bodied palate. It is bottled while still young to preserve its red color and fresh aromas before they oxidize. It can be aged in oak, but if so, only for a short time, no more than a few years, and almost always in large-capacity oak barrels to reduce the influence of oxygen during aging. The ruby style varies according to the intensity of the color, complexity of the flavors, and fullness. From least to most, here is the order:
- Ruby: a blend of approximately three-year-old port wine.
- Reserve Ruby: a blend of approximately six-year-old port wine.
- Late Bottled Vintage (LBV): a single harvest that is bottled 4 to 6 years after harvest.
- Crusted: Vintage Port that is bottled 2 to 5 years after the harvest and aged in the cellar for at least three years to form a crust inside the bottle.
- Vintage: a harvest that is bottled 2 years after harvest.
