Conceito Único Red Wine (Douro)

An elegant, fine and very lively wine with pronounced fruit. Velvety tannins with a fine structure and a long finish.

Rita Marques Ferreira, the owner and oenologist of Conceito Vinhos in Foz Côa (Douro Superior) surprised the wine world again with the Único Tinto 2015. With a small production of just 3,000 bottles, wine fans will have to hurry because after launching Único Branco 2015 earlier this year, it sold out completely in just a month. Since even we were completely surprised by the demand, we got hold of 60 bottles of the red Único this time. Why so much hysteria? Well, it's one of the best red wines in Portugal.

Único is the result of the production of a single plot, located at a very high altitude of 450 m. The vines are on average 90 years old and they are exclusively autochthonous grape varieties such as Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Rufete. The harvest is done manually and the grapes are co-fermented. Aging takes place in French oak barrels for 22 months (60% new barrels, 40% used once). In addition, there were excellent weather conditions that actually make the Único a unique wine that lives up to its name.

The wine is excellent for storage. If you're going to taste it now, give it some time and decant it in a large carafe.

Rita Marques Ferreira is one of the currently most highly traded winemakers of the new generation from the Douro Valley. Their wines regularly receive very high ratings from international wine critics.
Rita's family has been growing wine in the upper Douro for several generations. Their vineyards cover a total of around 85 hectares at an average altitude of 500m above sea level.
The vineyards are cared for without the use of chemicals and in a very natural way. Everything is still done manually. Rita, who incidentally learned her trade in Bordeaux and then worked as a "Flying Winemaker" in New Zealand and South Africa, sells parts of her harvest to other wineries. She only keeps the best for her own wines and uses them to produce fine and elegant wines with lots of freshness and minerality. Everything is well thought out because Rita has a concept. Hence the name: Conceito.
